Excel vs SQL vs Python vs Power BI: what should you learn first?

By Chetna Sharma, Handwritten eBooks & Tech Academy · Updated 25 October 2026

Quick answer

Learn Excel first (1 to 2 weeks), then SQL (the most important and most tested analyst skill), then Power BI or Tableau for dashboards, then Python. Excel teaches how data is structured, SQL gets data out of databases, a BI tool presents it, and Python handles large or repeated analysis.

Excel: learn it first, quickly

Excel is the fastest way to understand rows, columns, filters and aggregation. Pivot tables teach the same idea as SQL's GROUP BY. Most companies still share data in spreadsheets, so you will use it from day one.

SQL: the skill that gets you hired

Company data lives in databases, and SQL is how analysts get it out. It is short to learn, and it appears in almost every data analyst interview. If you only have time for one technical skill, make it SQL. Test yourself with our 15 SQL interview questions.

Power BI or Tableau: how your work gets seen

Managers read dashboards, not queries. A BI tool connects to your data, lets you model it and publishes interactive reports. Choose Power BI if your target employers use Microsoft 365, which is common in India; choose Tableau for many consulting and US roles. Learn one well.

Python: the multiplier

Python with pandas does what Excel does, on millions of rows, and repeats it with one click. It also opens statistics, forecasting and machine learning. Learn it after SQL so you already think in tables.

The recommended order

  1. Excel (1 to 2 weeks)
  2. SQL (3 to 4 weeks)
  3. Statistics basics (2 to 3 weeks)
  4. Power BI or Tableau (2 to 3 weeks)
  5. Python with pandas (4 to 6 weeks)

Frequently asked questions

Should I learn SQL or Python first for data analysis?
Learn SQL first. It is shorter to learn, it is asked in almost every data analyst interview, and thinking in tables makes pandas in Python much easier later.
Is Excel still needed for data analysts?
Yes. Most companies still share and review data in spreadsheets, and pivot tables, lookups and charts are used daily. It is also the fastest way to learn how data is structured.
Is Power BI better than Tableau?
Neither is better for every job. Power BI is more common where companies use Microsoft 365, including many Indian employers; Tableau is common in consulting and US roles. Learn one well, as the skills transfer.
Can I get a data analyst job with only Excel and SQL?
Yes, many junior roles need mainly Excel, SQL and a BI tool. Adding Python widens the jobs you can apply for.
